Card payment migration guide
Card machine after PSTN switch off
If your card terminal dials out over a phone line, it will stop authorising payments after the 2027 switch off. Here's which terminals are impacted, the replacement paths, and how to move without a day of lost trading.
Will stop working
- Countertop terminals plugged into a phone socket (RJ11)
- PSTN dial-up Ingenico iCT / Verifone Vx units
- Portable terminals with a phone-line base station
- Any backup dial-out path that relies on an analogue line
Will keep working
- Ethernet or Wi-Fi IP terminals
- 4G / GPRS mobile terminals (Square, SumUp, Zettle, Dojo, Stripe Terminal)
- Modern integrated EPOS terminals over the shop network
- Ingenico Move/5000, Verifone V240m and similar IP-first devices
Migrate without losing service — 5 steps
- Identify every card terminal on site and how it connects today.
- Ask your acquirer for a like-for-like IP or 4G replacement model.
- Book an overlap window — run old and new terminals in parallel for 3-5 days.
- Confirm your broadband can prioritise payment traffic (wired if possible).
- Retire the analogue line only after the new terminal is live and reconciled.

- Are any of our terminals dial-up/PSTN rather than IP, Wi-Fi or 4G?
- What replacement terminals or connectivity do you recommend, and are they PCI DSS compliant?
- Will transaction fees, rental costs or contract terms change?
- What is the lead time for replacement hardware and installation?
- Do we need a separate broadband or mobile data connection, and who provides it?
- What is the fallback if the internet connection fails during trading hours?
